Howdy Unforgotten listeners!
I’m so unbelievably excited to share the first episode of The Unforgotten: Riding Shotgun with you!
This season is reported, written and co-hosted by Michelle Pitcher, an investigative reporter covering criminal justice over at The Texas Observer.
Listen to Episode 1: The Guys in the Bug wherever you get your podcasts, including Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.
On a seemingly normal morning in 1998, Jill Barganier looked out of her kitchen window and saw two men get out of a car she’ll never forget: a Volkswagen Beetle with a psychedelic paint job.
She’d later learn that those two men killed her neighbor, Betty Black.
Desperate to help any way she could, she requested police hypnosis to try to relax and see if she could remember any more details. Police find the driver with little to no issue — he’s the owner of the bug — but the passenger is a different story. Jill insists she saw a white guy with a medium build and long hair down to his shoulders. But police think she should have seen a tall, overweight, Hispanic guy with a shaved head.
They even put the suspect in a photo lineup, and she doesn’t identify him.
But then, a year later, she identifies the suspect in court. And she says she’s positive.
Now, that man, Charles Flores, has been on death row for nearly three decades, and he still says they’ve got the wrong guy.
